The company was founded in Italy, 1891 when Gennaro Sferra set foot on the cross-Atlantic streamer that would carry him across the ocean to America. With a family history of craftsmanship, selling exquisite handmade Italian lace, collars, and cuffs would become his future. Capturing the fashion of the day, he sold to society’s tastemakers who vacationed at seaside resorts along the East Coast. Sferra soon gained a reputation for offering the finest and most exclusive fine linens.
Over the next ten years, Sferra experienced great success and evolved his focus to table linens while also instilling in his sons (Enrico & Albert) the mastery of textile craftsmanship, technique, and a desire for creative exploration. This refined the standards of the lien industry, making luxury and the Sferra name interchangeable.
It was Gennaro’s son Albert who would recognize that the ability of long-staple cotton could create a softer and smoother percale bend line. This ideation would start a revolution in the bedding industry that would change sleep forever. These linens were the precursors to what is now the Celeste Collection, the most popular of all Sferra linens for over 20 years. Continued growth and success allowed for more advancements, pushing Sferra to become the brand of choice for celebrities and public figures around the world including Pope John Paul II.
In 2008, the company launched a world-exclusive Egyptian cotton bedding with its suite of SFERRA Giza 45® Collections. Made from the rarest of all fine cotton known as the “Queen of Eqyptian Cotton, the percales, sateens, and jacquard woven from this cotton have developed an international fan base of fine linens connoisseurs.
