Bernardaud

Bernardaud

Since 1863, Bernardaud has combined craftsmanship, innovation, creativity, and heritage, mastering the art of French porcelain in Limoges. Known as an elite in design, they continue to develop technologies in manufacturing that push the limits of porcelain-making. Calling on some of the most renowned designers and contemporary artists in the world, they offer a variety of high-end dinnerware, china. lamps, candles, and jewelry, all still made in France.

The Limoges region of France is known for a white malleable clay called kaolin, one of the four ingredients used to make porcelain. The material was discovered in 1768 and established Limoges as an ideal geographic location for producing hard-paste porcelain. After the French Revolution, a number of private factories were established at Limoges, and by 1830, the region had replaced Paris as the main center for private porcelain factories.

In 1863, two industrialists opened a factory in Limoges to meet the increasing demand for porcelain dinnerware. It was in that workshop that the young apprentice Leonard Bernardaud caught the attention of the founders and was promoted to Head of Sales twenty years later. Eventually, he was made a partner by the founders and in his new role, Bernardaud found ways to increase production capacity and open new markets around the globe, especially in the United States.

He was succeeded by his sons, whose idea to collaborate with artists to expand product collections helped the company survive the Great Depression and World War II. In 1949, they introduced Frances’s first tunnel kiln (which operated 24 hours a day and ran on natural gas) that produced sturdier pieces free of defects. It was this innovation that allowed the company to produce on an industrial scale.

In 1962, Pierre Bernarduad modernized the company by installing an isostatic press, commissioned Raymond Loewy to design the first contemporary porcelain dinnerware service set, and launched the first TV ad campaign with a jingle that still resonates with the French today. His forward-thinking in technology, creativity, and communication enabled Bernardaud to adapt and remain relevant to the future generation of customers.

Today, Bernardaud is a fifth-generation family-owned company and has developed into an international brand that has created bespoke designs and decorative schemes for hotels and restaurants, producing quality lines of porcelain plates, cups, platters, lamps, and decorative objects that adorn the tables of some of the greatest chefs and palaces. The company continues to ensure that every creation bearing the Bernardaud mark is a symbol of luxury, excellence, and maintains the high-quality standard that the brand is famous for around the world. When you acquire a Bernardaud piece, you have acquired the best of France craftsmanship, innovation, and creativity.
