Gianni Versace designed his first collections for Callaghan, Genny, and Compliance in 1972. Years later, he launched Gianni Versace S.r.l and opened his first boutique in Milan. During that time, Versace was one of the few independent designers who was in control of everything about the brand, from design to retail. In 1982, the company expanded into other industries, including jewelry, home furnishings, china, and accessories.
In 1997, Gianni’s sister, Donatella Versace, stepped in as Artistic Director (formally the vice-president) and his older brother Santo Versace became CEO. It was Donatella that helped steer the company into the 21st century, having already created notable collections years prior. Their collaborations would go on to include Lamborghini, H&M, and Ford Motor Company, as well as celebrities and dancers. Its strong and fearless designs captured a new global audience, which strengthened its position in contemporary culture.
In 2000, Versace opened the first hotel project to be branded by a luxury goods company called Palazzo Versace. This provided travelers and tourists the opportunity to experience the Versace lifestyle. The second Palazzo Versace was built in Dubai in 2015 and the third is planned to be opened in Macau, China.
Today, Versace continues to excel in its designs, including providing sophisticated tableware collections from dinner plates to quality crafted glasses from the finest materials.
