Founded by Louis-Victor Pufiorcat in 1820, the company quickly rose to fame as one of the great silversmiths in France, providing pieces of silverware in the Regency and Louis XV style. Purfiorcat’s high standards and quality collections gained the attention of high-end clientele that included noble and royal families throughout Europe.
In 1920, the company gained international success under the leadership of master silversmith Jean Puiforcat. The 1920s was an era of rich cultural and artistic inspirations, leading Jean to create a revolutionary personal style similar to Art Deco, characterized by simplicity and functionality. These unique items from Puiforcat combined silver with exotic woods and precious stones, receiving international fame and inspiring some of the largest collections of contemporary silverware. One of his most famous collections included the elegant Cannes Silverware collection, its design inspired by the Hotel Martinez in Cannes, France, and was designed for his wedding in 1928.
In 1941, Jean moved to Mexico and started exhibiting in the United States. Puiforcat became synonymous with Art Deco glamour and to this day, Jean is renowned for his elegant, geometric, and combination of flawless metalwork. He was regarded as one of the most important silver craftsmen of the Art Decor period, leaving a lasting mark on the silver art of the twentieth century. A chain of boutiques was named after him in 1991, which sells his designs and sculptures.
Today, Puriforcat’s commitment to detail, excellence, and quality remain the guiding force behind the company’s products. Their value of preserving the craft of smithery and pushing the art of design has held their collections of cutlery, dinnerware, and accessories to be revered not only in France but around the world. Puiforcat pieces are held in the collection of Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
