Started in 1857, Moser was founded by talented businessman and engraver Ludwig Moser when he opened an engraving workshop in the town of Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The workshop was initially devoted to polishing and engraving glass blanks but later started designing and making its own glass products. Ludwig developed a lead-free sodium-potassium glass that is more ecologically friendly than lead glass. The skills to produce lead-free crystal takes years to master. The concept gives the glassmaker a very short time to shape it on the blowpipe, and because of its considerable hardness, it is difficult to cut. But lead-free crystal is remarkable for its purity, shine, and hardness in addition to its friendliness to the glassmakers and the environment. Today, it remains the basis of their products.

In 1873, Moser was awarded a medal for merit at the Vienna International Exhibition and that same year he was appointed the exclusive supplier of glass to Emperor Franz Joseph I. Ludwig would go on to win numerous awards in the following years, including medals at the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1879, 1889, and 1900, and the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. Ludwig took over a glass factory in Dvory in 1893, employed over 400 workers, and created a full-service glassworks under the name Glassworks Ludwig Moser & Sons. In 1869, the slogan Moser - The King of Glass originated after the director of the Vienna Museum for Art and Industry issued a certificate about the perfection of Ludwig Moser’s glass. Later in 1947, Czechoslovakia President Edvard Benes would gift a monogrammed Splendid set to the future Queen of England, Elizabeth II, as a wedding gift to her and her husband Prince Phillip.

In Bohemian glassworks, the colorless, clear, and hard potash glass was traditionally used because it was suitable for processing and decoration through grinding and engraving. However, a turn towards the use of colored glass would come after 1908, when Ludwig’s son, Leo Moser, step in as technical director. He started experimenting with melting copper-colored ruby red glass and in 1915 showcased the first collection of thick-walled heavy monochrome vases with regular facet cuts at the Modern Czech Glass exhibition in Prague. He then went on to introduce basic glass colors into production, giving them notable names that included: Purple Amethyst, Dark Green Smaradg, Brownish-Yellow Yopas, and Cobalt-Blue Saphir.

After Ludwig died in 1916, Leo Moser took over the business and worked to expand the company’s reach, resulting in their recognition of a Grand Prize award at the Paris International Exhibition of Decorative Art in 1925. Under Leo’s leadership, Moser exhibited in London, Belgium, Italy, and Vienna, along with producing what would become some of their most notable pieces. In 1927, his drive for innovation again pushed the limits of the company. Cooperating with Berlin’s specialist in the area of chemical glass colors, new types of molten glass were created and resulted in glass pieces with distinct color play. These new pieces were introduced at the Spring Fair in Leipzig in 1929. Leo’s desire for innovation and creativity still drives the business today.

Today, Moser is known throughout the world for its unique beauty, quality, and timeless designs. They are still producing lead-free handcrafted crystals and the company’s success lies in the hands of their elite artists. Moser has won a variety of awards including The People’s Choice category of Czech Grand Design (2012).
