Born in 1963 in Providence, Rhode Island, Michael Aram launched his first collection in 1989 after taking a trip to India where he began working with traditional artisanal techniques. Inspired by the trip, he established a second home and studio there, where he continues to draw inspiration today. The artisans he encountered were making ordinary objects such as buckets, shovels, and scissors, but for Michael, their traditional techniques were extraordinary. He would spend hours watching the artists, inspired by the talent and humility of these gifted individuals.
Michael trained as a painter, sculptor, and art historian. His work encompasses a rich and varied source of inspiration that pulls from nature, mythology, narrative storytelling, and purified form. A fusion of originality, narrative and traditional craftsmanship became his signature.
"My work combines the imperfections innate in the handmade process with the perfectly imperfect beauty of nature to create objects that reflect humanity." - Michael Aram
In 2007, he opened his first namesake boutique in Manhattan and employs over 200 artisans that work alongside him in his workshop in Delhi, India where the same creative interaction between artist and artisan remains the source of every object that he makes.
Michael has received a number of awards including the Designer of the Year Award by Elle Decor India, Retailer Excellence, Gift for Life Industry Achievement Award, and The Overall Excellence in Design Award.
