Shimada Glass (Toyo Glass) was founded in the village of Kawasaki, Osaka by Magoichi Shimada in 1888. Using the latest European glassblowing techniques, Shimada produced fine quality glass tableware and lamps. In 1909, Shimada established a factory in Ebie, Osaka, incorporating the latest glass making technologies and creating a groundbreaking furnace. Later reputed to be as good as “the German one.” He later secured a patent on his design.

Sorjro Sasaki (Sasaki Glass) created his glass shop in Kanda, Tokyo in 1902. The business was built around the wholesaling of oil lamps which was a major product at the dawn of Japan’s domestic glass industry. The following year, Sasaki’s began exporting lamps internationally from Hawaii to China to Southwest Asia. As gas and electric lamps grew more popular, the demand of oil lamps decreased and Sasaki focused his business on household glassware items. In 1917, he opened his own factory and started selling directly to keep up with the growing demand for his products.

Both companies experienced great success and were both pioneers in the glassware industry, breaking barriers in technology, design, and patents. One of the most notable being the development of glass printing technology and the first to print glass by machine screen printing. This innovation became the foundation for Japan’s glass printing development.

In 2002, the two companies merged and made the debut of Ion Strong®, the world's first full-surface crystal glass ion toughening technology, in 2008. In 2017, the Toyo-Sasaki Glass celebrated 50 years of their HS toughened glassware product series (Japan’s first and most successful commercialized glass-edge toughened glassware brand ). More than 800 million pieces of HS glass has sold worldwide since its conception in 1967.

Today, Toyo-Sasaki Glass’ factory is located in the city of Yachiyo and has one of the largest domestic production capacities for glass houseware products in the world, implementing the latest technologies with cutting-edge equipment.
