Inspired by his native Finnish landscape, Aalto's fluid waves have been an icon of Scandinavian design since winning the 1937 Paris World Fair. Each unique Aalto vase goes through a multi-step production process at the Iittala Glass Factory. The vase is mouthblown then the pieces are hand cut before going through several polishings.
Design pioneer Alvar Aalto's asymmetrical waves ("aalto" in Finnish) won the 1937 Paris World Fair. In the decades since, they've become an icon of Scandinavian interior design. Taking inspiration from the thousands of lakes in his native Finland, Aalto's waves combine function and sculpture.
